The story behind the piece:
As a young and struggling artist, I became involved with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation the late 80's. They put me on the cover of Bugle magazine and printed my first print. I had a center page spread in the same issue. I went on to exhibit at their National Convention that same year in Portland, Oregon. I had to borrow the money from Mommy to make the trip. (Thanks Mom) I didn't sell a thing. I came home with my tail dragging, but signed up for a Life Membership with RMEF anyway. I was so broke I had to make installments to pay it off. I supported them and they supported me. Over the years, staff came and went, but the core three remained near and dear. Lance Schelvan, who picked my work for the early publication, Dwight Van Brunt, who bought my work and later went on to have me illustrate his new hunting book, and Bob Munson, co-founder and past president of RMEF. I was thrilled when Bob called on me to create the new annual 'Founder`s Award' to be presented to an outstanding volunteer or supporter of RMEF. I suggested a cow and calf over the standard bugling bull. Every impressive trophy bull gets his start with a strong and protective mother. The title reflects her importance in their life cycle, and gives tribute to the vision that Bob and his partner, Charlie Decker, had in creating a foundation that has done so much to protect and preserve the legacy of such a noble and beautiful animal, my favorite, the elk.
